Article: For the Love of Dog

For the Love of Dog

If you’ve followed my artwork over the years, you probably know one thing about me…

I love dogs.

They’ve been one of the greatest blessings in my life. They’ve been my companions, my comfort, my constant source of unconditional love, and, in many ways, my greatest support. I honestly can’t imagine my life without them.

I’ve loved every dog I’ve been fortunate enough to share my life with, and each one has left a lasting imprint on my heart. Today, that special place belongs to my Mini Australian Shepherd, Jesse James.

When Jesse James was just five months old, he was diagnosed with a serious congenital heart condition. I was devastated. The surgery he needed was far beyond what I could afford, and I truly didn’t know what I was going to do.

A team that changed everything

The cardiology team at Colorado State University Veterinary Teaching Hospital, led by Dr. Brian Scansen, gave Jesse James the lifesaving surgery he needed.

Their extraordinary skill, compassion, and generosity gave my best friend a future—and gave me years I never thought we’d have together.

I have also been inspired by Dr. Stephanie McGrath and her team’s research into canine aging and neurological disease—work that may ultimately teach us something about both dogs and ourselves.

I look forward to continuing to learn and, where I can, finding meaningful ways to support this extraordinary work.

For me, it comes back to something very simple:

I love dogs, and I am grateful for the people who devote their lives to helping them.

Dogs ask for so little, yet they give us everything.
